We live in a digital world where children today spend more time online and using digital technology than ever before. While learning can be enhanced by the use of the internet and technology, the digital world also presents children with potential dangers. Therefore, it is important that we equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the digital world safely.
It is our job as educators and parents/carers to ensure that children understand the potential risks they may encounter while online. The development of E-Safety skills is of vital importance in ensuring our pupils have the necessary skills to use the internet safely and confidently. Pupils within Crawfordsburn Primary School participate in regular E-Safety lessons, and we also welcome the PSNI to the school to complete internet safety talks annually. Regular conversations about using the internet safely are crucial in helping our pupils navigate the digital world safely.
The digital world, popular apps and trends are regularly changing. Below you will find various resources and links offering guidance and support on how to keep your child safe online.
Many apps and games allow children to connect with each other, but they also allow children to connect with strangers too. Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Snapchat have a minimum age limit that is older than the age that children are when they are in primary school. Our pupils should not be using them, as they do not offer the correct levels of protection.
All social media and messaging apps should be used cautiously and under parent/carer guidance. Click the links below for parental guides with information on privacy settings and setting up parental controls. Each guide includes step-by-step instructions and short video tutorials.

The digital world is 24/7; it’s outside and inside the school gates. We as teachers and parents/carers need a service that does the same. Safer Schools NI is a digital library of age-appropriate safeguarding resources that can be accessed at any time, from a phone, tablet or computer. The Safer Schools NI App is a digital safeguarding communication toolkit that provides school staff, parents, carers, and pupils with the information they need to know, when they need to know it.
